iTunes and Amazon S3 Play Well Together

Amazon S3 iTunesMy digital music library is growing at a exponential rate lately and I have started to think about storage. Luckily, Amazon’s S3 service and some helpful little OSX utilities make it pretty easy to move your entire music collection over to Amazon S3 storage and still access all your content through iTunes.

The basic idea was to simply allow access to our music through the iTunes interface – and for that it works pretty well. The “peace of mind” obtained from having your music securely stored on Amazon servers is worth the (minor) drawbacks. WAN (Internet) speeds will only increase in the future, making the drawback of streaming a non-issue.

The tutorial is pretty straight forward and seems like a good idea. All my music is legit so I’m not to concerned about having it all live out on Amazon S3. I also like the idea that it gets stored on an Enterprise level storage infrastructure which will most likely outlast my average laptop harddrive.

Is it worth an experiment? Yes! Is the speed of my connection between my laptop and Amazon going to be an issue? Probably. Will something like this become the “norm” in the coming months or year? Oh yeah!
